Building Community Through Healthy Food:
ARDEN ARCADE EXPANSION
River City Food Bank brings its commitment to healthy eating and its mission to serve the hungry in Sacramento County to Arden Arcade.
In partnership with the Episcopal Diocese of Northern CA, River City Food Bank will act as the main pillar in what is to become a full-fledged human services campus in Arden Arcade. After a yearlong research effort, River City Food Bank targeted Arden Arcade as the area in which it can make the greatest impact in reducing hunger and building community. Revitalizing this area through healthy food, safe community gatherings, human services, and a place to be proud of is our goal.
Arden Arcade is a known food desert, where hardship, unemployment and crime are the prevalent qualities of this community. What was once a thriving middle-class suburb of Sacramento now suffers from extreme poverty and food insecurity, with little access to fresh food or human services.
92,976 total population living in Arden Arcade area to be served
Of 92,976 Arden Arcade population:
37,523 are living at 185% poverty
21,480 are food insecure
13,166 not receiving any food services
St. Matthew’s Distribution Space
7,000 square feet indoor space
9,702 cubic feet allocated for cold storage
2,000 square feet indoor event space
River City Food Bank’s second food distribution site in Arden Arcade brings healthy food and fresh produce to those living in the area. Additionally, with a large capacity refrigeration unit to be installed in the near future, River City Food Bank will act as a food hub to smaller food closets and pantries in the area. This two-pronged approach to feeding the hungry in Arden Arcade exponentially broadens the service area surrounding the Center and increases the numbers of individuals served.
Additional amenities include:
- On-site resource center
- Raised community garden beds
- On-site public tours and quarterly community dinners
- Access to other wrap-around services on the campus
- On-site clothes closet
- Campus K–12 charter school
